  • Need a Great Idea? Feed Your Brain
A lot of great ideas happen when two or more other ideas collide to form something completely new.

Think of this like those old chemistry movies we used to watch in school. You had all of those atoms floating around and when two collided -- bam! A chemical reaction. Maybe something new was created. Maybe something exploded. Or maybe it all fizzled out and nothing happened.

Well, a similar reaction is going on inside your brain or muse. Except instead of atoms floating around they're pieces of information or other ideas. As they drift about, they occasionally bump into each other. When that happens, you may get a new, third idea. Or a big explosion. Or absolutely nothing at all.

Now, if you have lots of atoms, or information and ideas, you're going to get lots of reactions. Some will fail. Some will be so-so. And some will be hot -- so hot, so full of energy, they'll have the power to change the trajectory of a business. Or even a life.

The problem occurs when you don't have lots of random information and ideas. Fewer atoms mean fewer reactions. On top of that, you still have to weed through the invariable duds. So the odds of landing that one amazing idea drop considerably.

But not to worry -- there's good news. You can increase your odds of getting those great ideas. Better yet, it's fairly easy and painless. Below are three ways to get started.

    1. Read, read and read some more. I know, I know, I can hear the groans already. "But I already have too much to read. How can I fit more reading in?" Never fear, there are ways to do this. (Remember I did say this was painless.)

The key is to keep it wide and shallow. What does that mean? Well, read lots and lots of different things, but keep it general. Read about sheep farming, finances, yoga, cooking, traveling, dog training, etc. But keep it general -- don't read deeply. You can even skim if that's all you have time for.

Start by subscribing to a couple of different magazines and e-zines. General interest magazines are really good for this -- Walt Disney used to read Reader's Digest. Scatter them around the house -- by the bed, the couch, even the bathroom. I'd put a few in your car as well for those times when you have to wait for an appointment.

When you have a few moments, flip through them. Skim a few paragraphs. See what catches your eye.

You can also buy or rent audio books and CDs and listen while you exercise, drive, do the dishes, etc.

Whatever you do, DON'T read publications related to your industry. That's for another time. This is brain-feeding time, not keeping up in your profession time.

    2. Travel the world. Traveling has so many fabulous benefits for your creative soul I could write an article just about that, but for now I'll limit my comments to brain food.

When you travel, you open yourself up to lots of new and exciting experiences. New sights, new sounds, new smells, new tastes, new textures. And they all have the ability to form a reaction with something else.

Don't have time to hop on a plane to India? Take a day trip to a town you've never visited. Or, if you can only spare a few hours, seek out a park you've never been to or a museum you've been meaning to see or even that new cute little shop that just opened. You can always find somewhere new to visit no matter how long you've lived in the same city. And if you're truly desperate, try walking around your neighborhood on the opposite side of the street in the opposite direction you normally walk. (It can help jolt you out of rut.)

    3. Open yourself up to new things. Of all of these, this one is probably the scariest. But, it also has the potential to be the most powerful.

Take the time to try new things. Meet people outside your normal circle of friends. Attend associations, nonprofits, hobby groups outside of the ones you usually go to. Listen to speakers on topics you know nothing about. Take a class at a community college about something outside your scope of knowledge. Or even have dinner at an ethnic restaurant you've never tried.

Now I'm not just talking about "typical" creative things, like taking an art class or learning to belly dance. If you're a creative professional, take a class on doing your own taxes or budgeting your finances or repairing your car. (Oooh, I bet all you creative folk felt a chill when I mentioned that.) The point is to really stretch yourself past your comfort zone. Make yourself uncomfortable. It's not only a great way to grow, but it's a fabulous way to keep your muse fat and happy.

And that helps keep the ideas flowing.

Creativity Exercises -- Prepare the banquet

Over the next month, I want you do to at least one tactic from each of the above three techniques.

    1. Read something you know nothing about. Even if you only spend five minutes skimming an article about quilting when the last time you tried to ...

Heart in a Snowball Quilt Block Pattern

This vibrant Snowball quilt block is assembled with a white on white interior and purple tips. A red heart is appliqued to the center of the 6" (finished size) block. If you're already into applique, the gentle heart will be a breeze, and beginners will find that it's a perfect first applique project (read my Needleturn Applique Basics for technique how-tos). The block is from a 2009 Quilting Forum event, where it was sewn by numerous members.

Reverse Capital T Quilt Block Pattern

The reverse version of the Capital T quilt block isn't seen as commonly as its counterpart -- where dark fabrics create the diagonal T-shape at each corner. Both blocks are assembled the same way, it's just the color values that are flip-flopped, but the two versions are unique enough that I felt a separate pattern would be a good option for the quilt block shown here. I've included instructions to make the block's flying geese units in a couple of ways -- both are quick-pieced but one technique results in no fabric waste. Choose the method that works best for the fabrics you have on hand. I saw some examples online recently of quilts made using this value layout, but can't locate them now -- the blocks looked wonderful placed on point.

Hearts 'n Rags Rag Quilt Pattern

Hearts 'n Rags is an easy rag quilt pattern, one that you can assemble pretty quickly. The quilt is made with a combination of block types: squares with raggy heart applique, plain floral squares, blocks cut from a border print and another unit created by sewing two bars together. Mine is lightweight, with no batting, but I've provided yardage and cutting instructions for a middle layer if you choose to add it.

I machine sewed my hearts to the blocks and left their edges ragged, but didn't clip them. They frayed pretty well during a couple of washings, but feel free to clip into the seam allowance of yours to make them a little bit fuzzier.

    Here's My Heart Quilt Pattern

Here's My Heart is a 64" x 84" quilt that's a combination of patchwork and appliqué. Alternate Snowball blocks are adorned with Sunbonnet Sue and Overalls Sam -- two traditional characters that quilters seem to either love or hate. The appliqué blocks are separated by "chain-type" patchwork that helps create a diagonal flow across the surface of the quilt. Increase the quilt's size by adding blocks or altering the borders, or make a quick wallhanging from fewer blocks.

    Mosaic Pinwheel Quilt Block Pattern

I wanted the two sets of spokes in the Mosaic Pinwheel quilt block to vary a bit in color value, but not enough to create high contrast between the two areas. The result is a quilt block with subtle differences in its pinwheels, creating somewhat of a colorwashed look. Go with more contrast if you like, and maybe even consider this one for a brightly colored baby quilt.

    Vintage Chains Quilt Pattern

Those of you who know me know that I love vintage reproduction fabrics, especially prints that were popular during the Civil War era, and that's what I had in mind when I designed this quilt. The fabrics might not all be right-on, but it has a vintage flair. If you aren't a fan of the vintage-look, it's easy to change the quilt's look entirely by simply choosing different fabrics. I rarely sew with solids, but this is a pattern I might consider for an Amish style quilt, combining deep navy or black with brighter colors. To make the Vintage Chains quilt, you'll sew batches of two different ten-inch blocks, and then place them on point and add a couple of borders. The quilt finishes at about 84" x 98".

    Snail's Trail Quilt Pattern

I like the neutral theme of this Snail's Trail quilt, but the pattern will look good sewn with any contrasting fabrics you choose. The 9-inch blocks are constructed with two fabrics: one light neutral and one dark. A very dark inner border surrounds the blocks, with a wider border beyond it. The Snail's Trail quilt finishes at 70" x 77".

    Singer Featherweight Photo Gallery

Tiny by today's standards, when people see a vintage Singer Featherweight for the very first time they sometimes think the little sewing machines are toys, but Featherweights are actually dependable workhorses that sew an excellent straight stitch.

I've had several Featherweights over the years, like this white version. It lives at my house right now, even though I gave it to my daughter years ago. She has a Bernina, but I expect her to retrieve this little guy at some point. You'll find more photos in our Featherweight Gallery, so take a look, and then consider sending me a photo of your sewing machine.

    Single T Quilt Block Pattern

There are many different types of traditional T quilt quilt blocks, but the Single T block variation is one of the quickest and easiest to make. The block is made up of half-square triangle units that come together to form a very visible T shape. At first glance the T block seems a little plain, but you can create all sorts of dramatic layouts with it by turning the blocks in different directions,.

Scrappy Framed Star Quilt Block Pattern

The pattern for this Scrappy Framed Star quilt block was originally used to assemble the 2007 Anniversary Sampler quilt. The block finishes at 12" square, and looks nice when it's either straight-set or  placed on-point. The design, with lots and lots of patches, is a perfect choice for your next scrap quilt.
